There are many reasons why you may want to download a Youtube video. Perhaps you are going somewhere with reliable WiFi services, or maybe you want to watch something on a vehicle ride without using all your data. Whatever the reason, downloading a Youtube video isn’t as difficult as you may think. Once you learn what to do, you’ll be downloading videos like crazy!
Be careful though, because although it is usually legal to share or embed Youtube videos online, downloading them for personal offline use isn’t always legal as it violates Youtube Terms of Service unless you have been given permission directly from Youtube to do so.
VLC is one of the best media players available, and it works with Windows, Mac, OS, and Linux. It can also help you to download Youtube videos. Although other methods are a bit more simple to use, VLC is one of the best. It allows you to download Youtube videos without having to deal with incessant ads and popups. It also allows you to access your videos faster than most other tools as it downloads directly from Google’s servers.
Before getting to the how-to of using VLC, we’ll warn you of the downsides to using this method for downloading Youtube videos. The issue with VLC is that you aren’t able to convert the video to any other format or choose the resolution.
Now for the how to. The first thing you are going to do is find the Youtube video that you wish to download. Once you’ve found the video, copy the URL.
Next, you will open up VLC, click on the Media option from the menu bar and choose Open Network.
If you are using a Mac the process is similar but not the same. Instead, you will click on File and then Open Network.
Once there, with whatever system you are using, you will paste the URL from Youtube into the box where requested. From there, click the Open button and your video will automatically start to play in VLC.
The next step is to select Tools from the toolbar on the top of the page. A drop-down menu will appear, and you will click Codec Information.
If using a Mac, you would click Window and in the drop-down menu click Media Information.
The next screen shows a plethora of information about the video, but don’t worry, there is only one thing you are looking for. At the very bottom is a bar labeled Location This shows the exact URL for the video, this URL comes directly from Google’s servers. What you need to do is copy that new URL link and paste it into the address bar at the top of your browser screen.
After this is done, the video will play in your browser. While it is playing, right click the video and click Save As (Save Video As on Mac) and wait. Once the download is complete, the video is available on your hard drive whenever you want to access it.back to menu ↑

Next, when the expanded settings panel appears, you will check whichever conversion options you would like. For simple downloads, you will most likely want the video to start at the start and end at the end of the video.
Directly to the left of the output resolution of your choice is a bubble. Click it. Name your video file in the text box that appears below. If you have the available space, it is usually best to select the highest resolution available.
Once you have completed this, click the Start button, which is a gray button at the bottom of the page. This will begin the process of conversion.
Once the conversion has been completed, click on the gray Download button. Once you have done this, your video will be available on your hard drive whenever you want it.back to menu ↑
