Who doesn’t crave for a perfect set of headphones when it comes to traveling and mood alteration? Boring journey, emotional mood swings and many other circumstances make headphones a sheer necessity. It even helps you to avoid the humdrum prattles that are simply lame ;). In today’s music freak generation, headphones can no longer be classified as “Want”…. It’s a “Need” now.
Headphones are a pair of small listening devices that are designed to be worn on or around the head over the user’s ears (Courtesy: Wikipedia). Headphones come in variety of different styles. Depending upon the type of headphone that can fit in or around the ears perfectly, the sound quality is varied. Types of headphones available in the market include:
1. In- Ear( or Canal) Headphones
This type of headphones directly sits in your ear canal. They’re lightweight, portable, and generally much cheaper than on- and over-ear sets. They fit snugly inside the ear canal to provide a tight seal so minimize sound leakage. However, sound quality is generally poorer than over-ear and on-ear designs, particularly at the base end. Wearing for a long period of time, such headphones may prove to be uncomfortable.
2. On- Ear (or supra- aural) Headphones
This type of headphones rest on the top of ear with leatherette pads around the ears. Comfortable than In- Ear headphones, they do not properly seal the sound.
3. Over- Ear( or circumaural) Headphones
This type of headphones encases the entire ear. Their increased size makes room for a larger driver, with louder volume and better bass performance.By covering the ear, these headphones offer good noise isolation, but they are a lot less portable than the other formats.
Qualities of headphones that needs to be considered before buying:
– The headphones should deliver full sound that’s balanced across treble, midrange, and bass frequencies.
Comfortable to wear
– The headphones you choose should be comfortable to wear.
– Noise cancelling headphones sample the noise around you and play an inverted version of that sound in your ears, cancelling out the noise around you.
– Noise isolation headphones block outside noise by creating a physical seal in or around your ears to keep music in and ambient noise out.

Sony Extra Bass MDR-XB250
Sony MDR-XB250 is a perfect pick for those who want powerful bass. You can activate or control the extra bass feature using the bass level controls. The headset will literally start to vibrate while the extra bass levels are at maximum, but it isn’t a drawback. This happens due to the deep thumping bass effects. Although it offers good quality sound, solid built body, comfort etc. it is not for everyone. The deep thumping bass might feel unnatural to some people. However we can turn off or reduce the “Extra Bass” easily.
Sennheiser HD 180
Sennheiser HD 180 Over Ear Headphone offers excellent lossless sound reproduction and good noise cancellation, less bass though the effect is deep thumping. It’s big soft cushioned earshells gives good comfortable feeling too.
Sennheiser has used 3 meter long cable, but frankly speaking with lot of mixed opinions we didn’t find that as a useful ranking factor since it doesn’t make any big difference to the headset. We believe that the 1.2m and 2m gives the maximum comfort with out movement restrictions and 3m is a bit extra long and is best for laptops as it hangs down all the time if it’s not properly tied.
Overall it’s a good product for the price!
Philips SHP1900/97 looks bit bulky and heavy. But for our surprise it was very light and that’s the main reason of the prolonged usage comfort. However, it’s definitely not the best portable headset for outdoor use as it’s big and bulky. It is designed for indoor use, especially with your desktop and laptop.
While we tested we found that the output is better while used with laptops and smartphones with good input. And in all other smartphones a volume booster or a sound booster app is required for experiencing the best from it.
